I had used an LED replacement bulb many years ago on an old head lamp and was surprised to see how small they have become. Not only have the LEDs have gotten brighter they now can pack the electronics for the power regulator inside the screw base. br /br /The TerraLUX TLE-1S MiniStar1 works great. I have an old 4 x D-cell head lamp that I use to use in the winter because it could throw a much brighter beam, making it easier to follow trails in the dark. When the small Petzl LED headlamps came out I switch to them because they were so much lighter. However, they could never throw a beam as far. br /br /Now I have a head lamp that is much brighter then my Petzel Tikka and it has a focusable beam. Going by the one watt specification the head lamp should now give over 100 hours of constant bright light because of the built in regulator. br /br /I still won't take the headlamp every where because of the weight but it is a great choice for a long winter hike with a big group where you really don't want to loose the trail.
